AWS positioned to scoop up distressed neocloud assets as the sector faces 2026 shakeout

The author argues AWS, having given up on dominating the AI application layer, is well placed to buy distressed neocloud capacity next year.
- Powered land (energized sites, grid interconnects) is the real prize, since time-to-power is the bottleneck.
- GPUs are less attractive: fast-depreciating, tied to one Nvidia generation, and mostly serving as collateral for asset-backed loans — lenders end up owning them. AWS's margin story increasingly runs on Trainium.
- Customer contracts can be rejected in bankruptcy or lost.
The efficient play: court-run asset sales or leasing distressed capacity cheaply (keeping spend off capex).
Buying CoreWeave outright means $50B of debt plus antitrust scrutiny. Other suitors: Nvidia (already committed to buying unsold CoreWeave capacity through April 2032), Microsoft (50% of incremental compute from third parties), SpaceX/Musk (who warns 200+ neoclouds could collapse while raising $40B in debt for GPUs), and infrastructure funds eyeing powered land. Consolidation looks likely either way.
