OpenAI preps post-election policy blitz to rebrand data centers and push AI "speed limits"

Per Axios (quoted via @choblin29), OpenAI is preparing a policy and PR blitz right after Tuesday's midterms: amid growing public backlash against data centers, it wants to rebrand them as "AI compute campuses" and push Congress for mandatory "speed limits" on the most powerful AI systems, with proposals stockpiled since August.

OpenAI is also bracing for a possible Democratic House and aims to shape the debate ahead of the 2028 presidential race; chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane told Axios: "AI is going to be the issue in 2028."

The retweeter (esr) warns that big AI providers will lobby to outlaw open-source/open-weight AI under safety-and-equity pretexts, building a regulatory moat to earn out astronomical capex — an opinion, not reported fact.
