Fake "Anthropic 14T leaked checkpoint" on HF Hub debunked via NumPy noise in hours
QGallouedec · x · 2026-11-02
The "leaked Anthropic 14T checkpoint" repo on Hugging Face (burner22/numbat) is fake, and HF engineer QGallouedec broke down how:
- Caught fast: the Hub community found in hours that 43 tensors regenerate bit-for-bit from NumPy noise seeded with SHA256(tensorname).
- Not malware: weights are safetensors (can't carry code); the two remote-code files are plain Python with only torch/transformers imports, no exec or network calls.
- Motive: likely engagement bait with a crypto flavor — a fresh "crypto markets & AI" account with an LLM-written bio riding the real Claude Code leak codename.
- Platform upside: every file is inspectable; range requests let you audit 7.7 TB with a 90 KB download, and the discussion tab debunked the hoax faster than any news article.
