Thorsten Ball: drop branches and PRs, push to main — the industry is catching up
RealGeneKim · x · 2026-11-02
Thorsten Ball argues from first principles that PRs no longer make sense: if you only use them to trigger CI, that's a fat commit; as mandatory review or knowledge sharing, the case is weak. Branches are also unnecessary — just push to main.
This is trunk-based development: true continuous integration against the trunk. DevOps luminaries Jez Humble (co-author of Continuous Delivery) and Gene Kim (The Phoenix Project) amplified it, with Humble noting it's "genuinely quite exciting to see the industry catching up."
