Fudan team maps the mechanics of hybrid long-context attention architectures

Fudan University / Qiu Xipeng's team released Mechanics of Long-Context Hybrid Models, systematically comparing hybrids of full attention with sliding-window (SWA) and gated linear attention (GLA/GDN) at 376M–3B scale.
- Mix positions, not attentions: pairing NoPE (position-bias-free) attention with biased modules works best
- Seesaw effect: SWA-NoPE extrapolates well but underperforms linear hybrids in continued long-context training
- No free lunch for linear hybrids: LA-NoPE trains long better but extrapolates worse
- Tidal effect: a few NoPE heads do coarse global aggregation while biased heads suppress noise — the real reason hybrids work
- Matthew effect fix: sliding-window constraint on GLA/GDN plus log-correction on NoPE yields 16x training-free extrapolation (4k→64k) at 100% accuracy on RULER NIAH-SK1
Mitigations include larger windows, LongCE loss, and the SWLA strategy.
