46-second sci-fi trailer made fully local on a MacBook M5 Max 128GB

A creator built a 46-second sci-fi trailer, "THE LAST SIGNAL", entirely on a MacBook Pro M5 Max 128GB — from a one-line idea at 2 AM to a finished cut at 5:38 PM, with no cloud renders, APIs, or subscriptions, and published the full pipeline with real clock times including the stalls.
Key practices:
- Memory rule: one model resident at a time; each stage batches all its jobs, unloads, and the next stage starts; heavy steps take a "memory lease" first
- Script first: 10-beat trailer script and 50s shot plan locked before any rendering
- 3D: procedural city-sized ship in Blender 5.1.1 Cycles on Metal (stills 11–41s, animation 12s/frame)
- Stills: Z-Image-Turbo (6B, bf16, 9 steps on MPS) in 55 min, run in two halves to fit memory; concept painting photorealized via img2img at 0.82–0.9; a memory guard rejected Qwen-Image (needs 48GB, only 23GB free) so he swapped models instead of forcing it
- Video: LTX-2.5 distilled for 20 cheap previs drafts (106s each), then only the 18 shots that made the cut got hq renders (9.5 min/take, 5h15m total)
- Auto-QC: local Qwen3-VL-32B judged 44 takes, passing only 10 (it reads motion from stills as "static"), so the final cut was picked by eye under a written exception
- Audio: ACE-Step 1.5 score auto-cut to the beat map; MMAudio large generated 25 effects (15 from actual clips for sync); ChatterBox voices; sub-bass synthesized in numpy
Final cut: 50 shots, 46.6 seconds.
