Debate erupts over mechanistic interpretability: missed opportunity or misunderstood effort

Andrew G. Wilson argues mechanistic interpretability was "a huge missed opportunity": people who joined hoping for mechanistic understanding of generalization got a "bait and switch" into a niche, esoteric effort around understanding the roles of individual neurons — a recurring gap between compelling ideas and actual work in alignment/interpretability. A reply pushes back, calling it hasty generalization: a large, often invisible community works on algorithms and representations, and even the criticized methods are attempts at the larger problems.
