Do driver versions change GPU device-code fingerprints? Experts debate compilers vs cubins
matiasgoldberg · x · 2026-11-01
Matias Goldberg and mike64t debate whether GPU driver versions affect device-side code fingerprints. Goldberg argues they definitely do: different drivers mean likely different compilers, changing instruction order, with scheduling changes and optimization regressions having the same effect. mike64t counters that in the compute world cubins are statically precompiled or generated via ptxas in a JIT-esque fashion, all in userspace, so identical cubins shouldn't change device-side execution despite the libuserspace compat shim bridging driver versions.
