Runway turns 8: founder on evolving from research curiosity to world models
gkopanas · x · 2026-11-01
Runway founder Cristóbal Valenzuela marked the company's 8th anniversary with a note to the team, reflecting on starting when generative models were "a research curiosity" and figuring out how to run an AI company from first principles.
He stressed that today's Runway looks nothing like the 2018 version—by design. Nobody expected the company to focus on video, let alone pretrain video models at scale or pursue world models. He warned against rewriting origin stories to fit the present, arguing the company's real essence is constant evolution.
A collaborator added his takeaway: be kind, be humble, be ambitious, follow your gut—"This is the moat."
