GPU break-even token throughput up 25-83% since May, squeezing inference providers' margins

SiliconData's "compute crunch spread" shows the minimum token throughput needed for a GPU to break even on on-demand rental costs has risen 25-83% since May—faster than typical software efficiency gains—compressing margins for inference providers renting GPUs while GPU owners capture the gain via higher rents. Comparing this with Anthropic's S-1 filing, Carmen Li notes Anthropic's reported GPU economics look far stronger, arguing that model efficiency, utilization, token pricing and demand mean not all GPU-hours are equal: you must track both cost and revenue per GPU-hour to see who really captures AI compute value.
