ChatGPT quotas tightened: every prompt will draw from your shared token allowance starting December

Per OpenAI's updated support doc, starting in December Plus, Pro, and Business plans will share one token-based usage allowance across ChatGPT chats and Codex, as Work's agentic capabilities fold into the main ChatGPT experience. Every prompt except Instant chat now draws from the same quota.
The author notes this was inevitable — Claude and Gemini already meter chats the same way. On a Gemini Pro subscription, roughly four prompts to the top model with Medium thinking can exhaust a five-hour limit (about two on High). His advice: drop high effort for simple prompts, lean on Instant and fast lightweight models like Gemini 3.8 Flash for document Q&A, which barely move the quota. When capped you can wait for reset, upgrade, or buy credits; combined usage and reset times show in Settings → Usage.
