Economists warn: AI agent-based modeling risks repeating the failed SFI agenda
Afinetheorem · x · 2026-11-01
Economist Andrey Fradkin argues the Santa Fe Institute's agent-based modeling agenda has been an under-appreciated failure in economics, and wants a history and explainer so people doing agent-based modeling with AI don't repeat the same mistakes. Afinetheorem agrees: converts from physics or CS repeat the same ABM errors, and he doubts the tradition produced a single model of interest—tipping points can be handled analytically. A sobering caution for the current wave of LLM-agent economic simulations.
