DeepSeek Details Always-On Agent Design With External Watchdog Session for Progress Monitoring
teortaxesTex · x · 2026-11-01
Screenshots from DeepSeek's agent engineering doc ("DeepSeek: Exploring…") reveal how it keeps agents persistently online:
- Beyond compute-storage separation, the system needs an external Control Loop independent of the main system to auto-recover from abnormal conditions over long-running operation.
- Traditional process-liveness checks fall short for agents: many failures aren't crashes but models falling into unproductive loops or drifting from their goals. A long-running agent must monitor not only whether infrastructure is alive but whether tasks are actually making progress.
- The concrete mechanism: an independent Watchdog Session outside the main system, driven by scheduled messages. Besides handling infrastructure failures (API errors, failed state recovery), the Watchdog uses the model to judge whether each Worker is making substantive progress or has strayed from the overall goal, intervening promptly on anomalies and retrying through transient external failures.
