Chain of Thought conflates interpretability and faithfulness — two very different things
rao2z · x · 2026-10-31
rao2z points out that Chain of Thought is bandied about equally for interpretability and faithfulness, but these are very different: a post-hoc rationalization may be completely fine for interpretability research, yet quite fatal for faithfulness — CoT may not faithfully reflect the model's internal reasoning. The distinction matters for how CoT-based interpretability findings should be read.
