AI compute credit crunch will force startups into long contracts or big prepayments
evanjconrad · x · 2026-10-31
Evanjconrad lays out how the AI infrastructure credit crunch works: clouds and buyers are currently not creditworthy enough to get debt financing, forcing near-100% prepayments. As AI scales, credit markets must absorb a massive single-sector capital deployment, making everyone more scared.
The problem flows down to the token layer: every inference provider and model lab struggles to be creditworthy enough to lease compute, so their lever is locking in large customer prepayments or long-term contracts from creditworthy customers. Fortune 500s can deploy huge token spend, but startups lacking credit will be pushed into longer contracts or bigger prepayments.
