Overfitting explained with two students and two exams
cneuralnetwork · x · 2026-10-31
An explainer post (with comic) using exam prep to illustrate overfitting: Student A memorizes 100 practice questions and scores 100% on the practice test; Student B understands concepts and gets 92%. On a new exam, A panics while B still solves the problems.
That's exactly what happens when a model memorizes training data instead of learning generalizable patterns — high training accuracy means little if the model fails on unseen data. The graphic visualizes it with training vs. validation bar charts.
