In a papal address, Pope Leo XIV called for AI to be "disarmed," urging UN member states to "take concrete steps toward banning lethal autonomous weapons" at their Geneva meeting. He warned that "machines are tools, not persons," cautioned against granting AI legal personhood or rights, and stressed that decisions affecting human life and force must remain under "effective, informed, and responsible human oversight." The address extends themes from his May encyclical on safeguarding the human person in the age of AI, following Pope Francis's 2024 call for a similar ban.
