Engineer's viral reflection: being part of the 'last pre-singularity generation'
willdepue · x · 2026-10-31
Andrew McCalip posted a widely shared reflection on being possibly part of the "last pre-singularity generation."
At 37, he grew up with no computer, no internet, no TV — playing under street lamps and memorizing entries in the Encyclopedia Britannica before hearing the 56k modem screech. Now he speaks into "a slab of silicon and glass" and watches code manifest "like water flowing down a hill," communing daily with what he calls an alien intelligence.
He describes the surreal contrast of experiencing both extremes — a genuinely pre-digital childhood and the current AI era — within the same head and lifetime. willdepue retweeted the post.
