Neuralink's R1 surgical robot implants brain electrodes in 1.5s per thread, 11x faster
XFreeze · x · 2026-10-31
Neuralink detailed how its R1 surgical robot implants ultra-thin threads carrying over 1,000 electrodes into the human brain:
- Five camera systems and sensors map the brain's surface and update the mapping in real time as the brain moves
- The robot identifies and avoids tiny blood vessels
- A needle thinner than a human hair inserts electrode threads one by one
- Insertion cycle is just 1.5 seconds per thread — an 11x improvement over the earlier system
This precision underpins brain-computer interfaces that let paralyzed people control computers with their thoughts.
