Using AI to turn 550-page insurance rate filings into an interactive premium calculator
NotEasyBeingGreener · reddit · 2026-10-31
Insurers must file rate models with state regulators, but the filings are unwieldy 550+ page PDFs. The poster's approach: attach the PDF to an AI chat with one prompt — read the filing, understand the premium factors, and build a tool to explore rate calculations.
The AI produces both a summary and an interactive UI (screenshot shows a "Washington Auto Rate Explorer" built from State Farm's WA rate manual, letting users tweak age, gender and other inputs to see the six-month premium rebuild step by step).
It reveals how marriage, vehicle choice, speeding tickets, at-fault accidents and credit ratings each affect your premium — arguably more transparent than what insurers disclose directly. Works on free tiers of Claude and Gemini. Caveat: filings may not capture every factor, so results can differ from actual quotes.
