Chrome 157 ships HTML-in-Canvas: render live web pages into canvas with shaders
dotey · x · 2026-10-31
Chrome 157 (Chromium-only for now) adds HTML-in-Canvas: real HTML inside <canvas layoutsubtree content="drawable"> is laid out normally but only appears when you draw it in an onpaint handler via drawElementImage.
Key points:
- Once the page is pixels, you can copy it into a WebGL texture each frame and apply fragment-shader effects (wavy distortion, ripples) that CSS can't do — while inputs and buttons stay interactive.
- Nick at baked.design built demos like a Wishing Pond where you toss coins into a water-height grid, plus Snowfall and Margin Dragon, and published an interactive tutorial with full source code.
