pi-rs: Open Source Rust Port of the pi Coding Agent Ships pi-durable, No Node Needed
jasonkneen · x · 2026-10-31
pi-rs is a new open source Rust port of pi, the minimal, extensible coding agent harness. It builds a single native binary with no Node.js or Bun required at runtime.
Key details:
- Keeps the same CLI, terminal UI, on-disk formats (sessions, settings, auth.json, models.json), RPC protocol, and extension API as the TypeScript version
- TypeScript extensions run on an embedded JavaScript engine; existing pi docs apply
- Now includes pi-durable; the author describes it as pi but faster and smoother, ready for everyday use
- Requires Rust 1.88+, installable via cargo install; early-stage (86 stars) but actively developed (448 commits)
