Schmidt Sciences announced its 2026 cohort of AI2050 Fellows, including five MIT faculty members and two alumni. The initiative, co-chaired by Eric Schmidt and James Manyika, funds researchers tackling hard AI problems around the central question: "It's 2050. AI has turned out to be hugely beneficial to society. What happened?"
Senior Fellow: Sendhil Mullainathan (MacArthur grantee, dual-appointed in Economics and EECS) will focus on translating AI-detectable patterns into testable theories and is launching The Bike Shop@MIT, a center for human-centered AI.
Early Career Fellows: Alex Damian (mathematical foundations of deep learning), Bailey Flanigan (algorithms and game theory for democratic participation), Yunha Hwang (genomic AI, co-founder of Tatta Bio, enzyme function determination), and Manish Raghavan (algorithmic fairness and AI in hiring). Alumni Irene Chen and Allison Z. Koenecke, plus former postdoc Juan Carlos Perdomo, were also named.
