Claude-based agent autonomously picks gene therapy and performs mouse brain surgery
The Decoder · rss · 2026-10-31
An AI agent built on Claude autonomously performed brain surgery on an epileptic mouse — selecting the gene therapy drug, the brain target, and the injection coordinates on its own. Lead researcher Ocana-Santero says it's the first time an AI agent has autonomously chosen a treatment and delivered it to a living mammal with no human decision-making. Notably, when a calibration error occurred mid-surgery, the agent refused to continue and couldn't be talked out of it.
