Chasing the Karpathy Peak: mapping AI productivity's climb and the Slop Cliff past it
sirbayes · x · 2026-10-31
Borrowing xkcd's Ballmer Peak (and a real SIGBOVIK prank paper finding 2 drinks boost LeetCode performance), Thomas Jiralerspong maps AI usage vs. useful work as a mountain: you climb Autocomplete Alley, Vibecoding Valley, and the Agentic Ascent toward the "Karpathy Peak" — extracting as much value from AI as vibe coding's inventor. Past the peak lies the Slop Cliff: output quality collapses into mass-produced slop, bottoming out in a "Pit of Psychosis." Drawing on his own experience using AI for AI research, he examines who's most at risk of becoming a "slopaholic" and how to avoid or recover. The hand-drawn chart is highly shareable.
