Three early-career MIT mathematicians surveyed 268 grad students and postdocs from nearly 60 institutions across at least 5 countries in Sept–Oct 2026, mostly before OpenAI released 700+ AI solutions to open problems.
- 76.3% expect AI to make tenure-track jobs harder to get
- Fear of being scooped by AI is making some young mathematicians share less of their unfinished work
- Among those who use AI in research, 54.8% say they dislike doing so
The paper urges senior mathematicians and university administrators to act on the younger generation's concerns.
