Google Confirms TPUs Worked in Space: Four Satellites Processed a Prompt in Orbit
danielrock · x · 2026-10-31
Google announced the first milestone of Project Suncatcher, its space-compute moonshot: four satellites launched October 1 carried TPUs that successfully powered on, processed a prompt, and transmitted the response back to Earth.
The test validates that AI hardware can operate in orbit, a key step toward space-based compute. Two more TPU-equipped satellites are planned for 2027.
Still early days, but the long-term bet is that orbital compute could sidestep terrestrial data center power and cooling constraints.
