OpenRouter ships biggest router overhaul yet, rewarding quality-per-cost over cheapness
stuffyokodraws · x · 2026-10-31
OpenRouter shipped its biggest provider-routing improvement since founding, with full documentation. The old router prioritized mostly on price; the new one ranks endpoints by what users actually pay for a good result — cache-adjusted effective price, TTFT, end-to-end TPS, failed responses, and 429 fallbacks. Providers delivering more value automatically win more traffic. Inference provider EBorgnia (CBorgnia) praised the update, saying it pushed providers to genuinely improve serving engines and that the team was transparent during the transition; he also tried red-teaming the algorithm during initial rollout.
