ZORO: a UIST 2026 system that forces coding agents to actually follow your rules
sh_reya · x · 2026-10-31
jennyma shares her first UIST paper (UIST 2026), ZORO, a rule-enforcement system for coding agents. The premise: AGENTS.md files are passive text that agents can freely disregard. ZORO works in three phases:
- Enrich: injects rules (e.g., "the UI must follow brand colors") into the agent's plan, tagging which rules apply to each step
- Enforce: gathers evidence at execution time — inspecting code values, running assertion tests — to verify compliance
- Evolve: turns in-situ user notes (e.g., "dark green on light green is hard to see") into refined rule updates
The paper shows a full mechanism for turning passive rule text into verifiable, evolving constraints on agent behavior.
