NVIDIA + SETI: Agentic Observatories
Breakthrough Listen and the SETI Institute have brought agentic AI into the daily search for extraterrestrial intelligence at the Allen Telescope Array in Northern California. With a single natural-language request, agents can steer the telescope's antennae, calibrate and focus the instrument, correct data errors, and run AI models on the incoming signal stream — compressing what once took humans weeks or years into hours.
The Stack
- NVIDIA Holoscan processes massive live sensor data; the DAQIRI library pulls terabits per second of sensor data straight into GPU memory, processing observations in flight rather than writing to disk.
- CyberEther, a SETI Institute signal-processing framework, does the math on CUDA-X libraries (cuFFT, cuBLAS).
- Nexus, a web-based observatory orchestrator, serves as the agent harness — a single source of truth for instrument state, compute, and pipelines — letting researchers monitor packet loss, read live spectrograms, and rewrite signal-processing blocks via natural language.
- The system handles 2.4 Tb/s on NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs, with inference running on premises next to the instrument.
Results and Next Steps
The pipeline has achieved the first real-time AI detection of a pulsar — in the Crab Nebula. The team is now evaluating open models including NVIDIA Nemotron for data-locality-sensitive cases and observatories that may one day run offline on the far side of the moon. Andrew Siemion, principal investigator of Breakthrough Listen, noted that what agentic observatories find may have more in common with themselves than with humans — but that this is a breakthrough in translation, not a threat.
