Toska: Open-Source Krita Fork With an Agentic AI Painter for Under $7/Month
yawk-ra · reddit · 2026-10-31
The author open-sourced Toska, a Krita fork with an AI painter inside. You chat with it in a panel and it paints move by move using Krita's own brush engine on undoable layers—no generative fill.
- Core mechanism: "Decision Models" score each pass as better/worse probabilities, letting the agent undo mistakes and choose brushes, textures, and tools on its own.
- Costs: The author pairs GPT-6-Luna (decisions) with DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash (both vision-capable), spending just $2.83 + $3.82 for a full month; OpenAI-compatible APIs mean local models or Perplexity's open pplx-decider-v1.2 work too.
- Architecture: Built on Agent Pi's TypeScript SDK + Qt as a painting plugin, deliberately sandboxed—no code execution, only Toska's tools and mounted files. Currently a macOS dmg; Windows/Linux builds coming this week. The demo paints Dostoevsky on Semyonovsky Square in 1849; detailed work "New Moscow" is on ArtStation. Repo is open source.
