TextFold: open-source reader keeps LLM summaries one click from source text
Lopsided_Scarcity979 · reddit · 2026-10-30
The developer released TextFold (Apache 2.0, free), a reader that keeps source text one click away from any LLM-generated reading layer, with a companion browser extension.
- Five reading depths: Full (original), Brief (1–3 original sentences per paragraph), plus model-generated Key, Takeaway and Topic with progressively less detail.
- Key design: expand any single paragraph back to the original while the rest stays folded, so readers can verify questionable compressed lines without opening a second document.
- Works with Ollama locally or a hosted provider; the extension captures the page on click and hands it to the local app, without bypassing access restrictions.
- Code at github.com/chenxiachan/textfold; extension supports Chrome/Edge/Brave, loadable via developer mode while under store review.
