UK Data Centre Covenant: Strict Criteria as Report Questions Compute Demand
ersatzben · x · 2026-10-30
A new report offers the first detailed overview of planned UK data centre capacity and questions whether demand for UK-based compute is actually low.
Under the new Data Centre Covenant, strategic data centres must meet criteria for extra government action: investing in local communities, creating lasting well-paid jobs, prioritizing UK suppliers and British AI hardware, protecting nature, minimizing water use with annual energy/water reports, and capturing waste heat for nearby homes and hospitals. Projects that fail risk having their grid connections reallocated. Critics argue price and planning are the real bottlenecks and government should avoid raising developer costs.
