Indie developer Dwayne launched Better Rich Text, a one-off-purchase WYSIWYG editor whose site strikes through every line of TinyMCE's and CKEditor's pricing fine print:
- Metering: TinyMCE charges $40 per 1,000 editor loads over plan (every editor on a page counts); CKEditor $30-60. No load metering here.
- Collaboration: TinyMCE sells Suggested Edits and Revision History at $787/year each (Professional plan only); CKEditor needs Professional plus a $249/month add-on. Comments, suggested edits, revision history and real-time co-editing are all included here.
- Price hikes: CKEditor Professional with collaboration rose from $405 to $538/month in 2026; TinyMCE Essential from $67 to $79/month. No subscription to raise.
- Everyday features: Markdown, mentions, merge tags, templates, footnotes, math, code highlighting, accessibility and link checkers — features TinyMCE gates behind $79/month.
- Documents: TinyMCE Word export starts at $39/month for 200 docs plus $0.25 each; here Word import/export runs in your app, PDF via browser or your own server, no per-document fees.
- Self-hosting: runs on your servers, no licence server, nothing phoning home.
It ships a comprehensive developer API and positions itself as the no-subscription alternative for developers.
