Open-source Ivory adds an MCP server so AI agents can diagnose database clusters without SSH
aelsergeev · reddit · 2026-10-30
Ivory, an open-source database cluster management tool, now ships with a built-in MCP server, letting AI agents in Claude, Cursor, Codex or any MCP-compatible client investigate cluster issues — no more 3 a.m. SSH sessions checking replication, running diagnostics and reading logs by hand.
Example prompts: "Why is my PostgreSQL replica lagging?" "What's blocking queries on the production leader?" "Check my clusters and flag anything that needs attention."
The hard part was doing it safely; the author's design decisions are instructive:
- Permission-based tools: agents only see operations their Ivory user is authorized to perform
- No credentials exposed: SSH keys and DB passwords stay in Ivory's vault
- Read-only by default: dedicated view-only users supported
- Destructive operations marked: MCP clients must request approval before dangerous actions
Supports PostgreSQL, Patroni, Redis, MongoDB, ClickHouse, etcd and ZooKeeper. Open source; feedback on the security model welcome.
