AIGENIE: free R package uses AI to write and prune psychological test items before pilot studies

GolinoHudson · x · 2026-10-30

Sergio Escorial highlights a tutorial paper by Russell-Lasalandra, Golino, Garrido and Christensen introducing AIGENIE (Automatic Item Generation and Validation with Network-Integrated Evaluation), an open-source R package on CRAN, free for non-commercial use.

Traditional scale development takes months of expert item writing and piloting. AIGENIE instead uses AI to draft items, converts them to numbers, and prunes redundant items via network psychometrics before collecting a single response.

The work sits in the emerging field of generative psychometrics, built on evidence that item text already carries most psychometric information: Fyffe et al. (2024) showed transformers identify an item's target construct more accurately than human raters, and Hernandez & Nie (2023) predicted inter-item correlations from text.
