Quizlet's Cocoonote SEO scaled too fast and Google's algorithms crushed it

SEO practitioner Gagan Ghotra reports that Cocoonote, a Quizlet property, aggressively scaled programmatic SEO pages and has now been crushed by Google.
He noticed the strategy in late 2024 but stayed quiet to test whether Google would act without public pressure in the SEO community — it did. Semrush data shows organic traffic peaking around 166K and organic keywords near 477K before collapsing (now 15.2K traffic, 2.9K keywords); a site: query shows 15,200 pages largely wiped from visibility.
His takeaway: once a sketchy strategy becomes a talking point on X, manual spam-team action risk rises — but even without publicity, Google's algorithms now catch "too much scaling too quickly" on their own.
