Ollama installed ≠ model downloaded: pitfalls when running it on cloud GPUs
NoConflict2854 · reddit · 2026-10-30
Drawing on personal experience deploying Ollama and DeepSeek on cloud GPU images, the author stresses that having the runtime is not the same as having the weights:
- ollama --version reports the version and ollama list shows models on the Ollama server you're connected to; neither downloads a missing model, and a tag in a screenshot doesn't identify the weights later.
- Record the model identifier or digest, quantization, and context setting; check the model card before downloading.
- A DeepSeek-R1 distilled model is not full-size R1.
- After loading, test with the input lengths and concurrent requests your app actually needs — a successful short answer doesn't prove larger workloads fit.
The author mentions trying Glows.ai, whose catalog separates Ollama environments from DeepSeek-R1 images (mild promo).
