The New York Times reports that Photon Matrix, a startup in Changzhou, China, is marketing a $1,000 AI-enabled device that tracks mosquitoes in flight and burns their wings off. It uses sensors developed for self-driving cars to pinpoint targets, with AI deciding when it is safe to fire while avoiding people, pets, and reflective surfaces.
In a demonstration at the company's office, the brick-size white machine zapped mosquito after mosquito, each bursting into green or blue flame. CEO Wang Chuan noted the kill isn't quick — mosquitoes with burned-off wings can take hours or even days to die — and safety concerns remain a talking point.
