aaronmring reports that with some kernel engineering, a MacBoke Pro M5 Max (128GB unified memory) running the BindCraft protein design tool holds its own against dedicated NVIDIA cards. In the shared benchmark, the M5 Max completed a 146-residue Ubiquitin binder workflow in 4:08 — beating RTX 6000 Ada, L40S and A100 SMX4, close to RTX 5090 (3:55) — while a larger 406-residue target took 33:21 vs 18-20 min on Blackwell cards. He urges protein design tool developers to add first-class Apple Silicon support.
