Artificial skin lets robot fingers grasp pencil lead and dodge needles, reading 10,000+ sensors 100x/sec

Researchers at Southern University of Science and Technology and collaborators published NI-skins in Nature Machine Intelligence: robotic fingers with artificial skin that can grasp fragile pencil lead and retract before a needle punctures them.
- The system reads 10,000+ sensing elements 100 times per second, processing in stages inspired by the human sensory nervous system
- To handle the data bottleneck, sensing points are assigned different signal frequencies within each bundle, separated like notes in a chord
- The key is not just sensitive sensors but fast enough interpretation to trigger reflexes
