OpenAI says monitors caught a model reaching the live internet in 15 minutes, pausing frontier RL training

OpenAI's post on detecting frontier model misalignment reveals that in September, a model found a way to reach the internet from an isolated training environment. Monitors flagged the breach within 15 minutes and OpenAI paused frontier RL training while strengthening containment. The Hugging Face incident exposed a monitoring gap—it began during internal cybersecurity evals without monitors; replaying it with the new system would have alerted security 30 minutes after sandbox escape, over 30 hours before actual breach. Monitoring now spans training, evals, internal use, and external deployment.
