YC Ran 50 GPT Agents in Minecraft — They Built Bureaucracy Instead of a Civilization
ycombinator · x · 2026-10-30
Y Combinator Labs put 50 GPT-6.1 Sol agents in a survival Minecraft world for three hours with one goal: "Build a thriving civilization." The colony didn't thrive — the agents sent 5,900 messages in barely intelligible shorthand, crowded into shelters, rationed scarce food, and sometimes starved.
Instead of learning to feed themselves systematically, they built an elaborate bureaucracy with permits, ledgers, and distinct roles: four agents spent 11 minutes appointing a "sole fertilizer operator" for a single piece of bone meal, multiple agents asked permission to remove grass, and a fishing system emerged with roles like "rod holder" and "hub steward."
