Claude's 'neuralese' writing style backfired — Anthropic dialed it back after complaints

Will Oremus flags his most annoying Claude tic: giving action verbs to inanimate subjects — taut when used well, formulaic when overused.
Quoting Arvind Narayanan: you'd expect superintelligent writing to be human good-writing traits — figurative language, information density, coined terms, punchiness — cranked to 11. Claude did exactly that until Anthropic dialed it back after user complaints. It didn't read as superintelligent; it read like 'a stupid person's idea of a smart person.' Our tolerance for density and metaphor has a cliff edge, and human writers hold back not from incapacity but from knowing it backfires.
