Sam Altman says self-replicating data centers are 'within grasp', eyeing compute-energy-labor bottleneck
kimmonismus · x · 2026-10-30
Sam Altman told Dean Ball that "self-replicating data centers" — using AI to control robots, run fabs, and build turbines or solar panels to construct data centers — are "within grasp."
He sees three major bottlenecks: compute, energy, and human labor. His proposed solution: robots build the data centers, solar or future fusion energy powers them, and chip production scales up in parallel.
kimmonismus notes this could be market reassurance, but if the triad really is solvable, it would be nothing short of revolutionary — everything depends on it.
