Anthropic debuts 'self-assessment': Claude flags misuse right after each reply
AnthropicAI · x · 2026-10-30
Anthropic announced a safety technique called self-assessment: right after responding, Claude produces a preliminary safety assessment of the conversation to flag potential misuse.
Key points:
- In use since June, it has surfaced misuse that existing safeguards weren't designed to catch;
- It's efficient because Claude has already read the conversation;
- Unlike classifiers targeting a discrete set of harms, it draws on the model's own judgment and improves as models get better.
Details are on Anthropic's new Safeguards blog.
