Economist Jason Furman on AI in research: use it up front and for replications, beware slop
Afinetheorem · x · 2026-10-30
Former CEA chair and Harvard economist Jason Furman lays out three takes on AI's role in economics research: (1) AI should play a large role before anything is published so results come out right the first time; (2) AI should be central to retrospective replications; (3) the Piketty-Saez-Zucman inequality work has many flaws that all point one direction. He warns that spreading slop hurts all three causes. Quant researcher Afinetheorem endorses every word.
