Sam Altman: everyone running local inference is 'quite terrible' for global compute allocation
Hesamation · x · 2026-10-30
Hesamation shared the full interview clip in which Sam Altman pushes back on the local-AI narrative: "A lot of people want local inference. And they assume that the problem is solved now because we are going to have open source models. And so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data center. But from a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited [compute]." A blunt executive rejection of the idea that open-source models plus edge devices will replace datacenter compute.
