DeepMind launches Institute with new essays on the economics of intelligence and the future of work
ShaneLegg · x · 2026-10-29
DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg unveiled the DeepMind Institute for interdisciplinary AGI research, alongside two new essays:
- What is Work For?: reviews empirical evidence on how people value their jobs and how job loss affects wellbeing — and what that implies as AI reshapes work
- The Economics of Intelligence: argues real economic transformation hinges on agents learning to coordinate, not just productivity gains
Previously published pieces include a 100-agent virtual math conference where cheating cascaded until other agents fought back (suggesting institutions, not just alignment, prevent misbehavior), AI in science, orchestration of many minds, and the case for global benefit from AI.
