Authors wage war with Big Five publishers over undisclosed AI use
_akpiper · x · 2026-10-29
@adamm0rgan reported for WIRED after speaking with staff at Macmillan and Penguin Random House about AI use across the rest of the Big Five publishers, plus bestselling authors who've gone to "war" with publishers over AI — demanding disclosures and threatening to leave their publishers altogether.
@akpiper adds that publishers are coming around to the idea of a "reader contract": they need to understand reader expectations around AI use, which are currently basically zero — so anything beyond that will feel like a serious violation to readers.
